Kino Pod Baranami invites to the next edition of Manhattan Short Film Festival - a unique festival that takes place simultaneously all over the world. The programme of the screening includes ten films qualified for the finals, from which, together with viewers from many other countries, Krakow's audience will choose the best one.


Manhattan Short Film Festival is the only festival in the world that takes place simultaneously in more than 400 cinemas on six continents, gathering hundreds of thousands of cinema lovers from almost every corner of the globe. This year, out of the 1250 entries from 70 countries, 10 titles have been selected for the competition. During the October evening at the Kino Pod Baranami, Krakow audience will get to know this elite group and together with film fans from all over the world will decide which of the titles deserves the main award of the Festival.


The final ten of the Manhattan Short Film Festival presents a gallery of unusual and diverse titles, such as suspenseful thrillers, intimate dramas, funny comedies and visionary science fiction films.
The programme includes an absurd story about waiter's revenge (Tipped), a bold vision of the apocalypse (At The End Of The World) and an unpretentious look at the problem of human trafficking (Debris). Kino Pod Baranami will also present a film with great British actor Timothy Spall, who in This Time Away will struggle with the overwhelming loneliness interrupted by the arrival of a certain... robot! In addition, female directors will play a key role at the Festival, as half of the final productions are directed by women. Their point of view will be presented for example in A Family Affair - a film by Florence Keith-Roach, who is also the founder of the production company Orphee Productions, which focuses on telling stories from a woman's perspective.


All films will be presented in original language versions with English subtitles, without Polish translation.

Inspired by films Babel and The 400 Blows, humorous story about growing up in unfavourable conditions, shot by an experienced short film maker Yves Piat.

Two football-loving brothers find a donkey lost in the middle of the desert on the Algerian border. But why does the animal wear headphones on its ears? Interested in the load carried by the donkey (bags of mysterious white powder), the boys bring him to their village.

DRIVING LESSONS
(Marziyeh Riahi) IR 2019, 12’

Inspired by true events, an intimate portrait of social changes. Tradition confronts modernity in Marziyeh Riahi's film and progress conflicts with stagnation.

The main character of Driving Lessons is Bahareh, who is learning to drive a car. Local regulations require a woman to never be alone with an instructor in a vehicle while learning. Bahareh is accompanied in her lessons by her husband, who clearly does not get along with the teacher.

 

TIPPED
(Alysse Leite-Rogers) CA 2019, 13’

Filled with humor and absurd short comedy about a difficulties of waitress's job, who is no longer able to withstand her clients' behavior and therefore begins a bloody revenge.

The film Tipped, made by experienced Hollywood assistant director Alyssa Leite-Rogers (The Cabin in the Woods, Sucker Punch), literally shows the potential consequences of the disrespectful treatment of restaurant staff.

The main character of Richard Prendergast's 8k film, based on real-life events, is a car - an old Opel Senator. Bought by the new owner, hides a mysterious letter containing a touching story about the previous users.

Awarded at numerous festivals, this short film is praised especially for the poignant role of Jolie Lennon, who in an unusual way captures the whole range of emotions of her character on the screen.


THE MATCH
(Pia Andell) FI 2018, 15’

Two middle-aged women turn a casual game of tennis into an intense competition.

The Match by Pia Andell, the director awarded many times at Fnnish short film festival in Tampere, is a story about muffled feelings, sprouting aggression and the search for an outlet for awakening emotions. One of the actresses is the popular Finnish actress Milka Ahlroth (On The Other Side of Hope, Parked, Joulumaa).

 

THIS TIME AWAY
(Magali Barbe) UK, 14’

A moving story about living in isolation, with the wonderful Timothy Spall (Party, Denial, Mr. Turner) in the lead role. The elderly man lives like a hermit, persecuted by his past and the memory of his lost family. His loneliness is disturbed by an "inhuman" guest.


MALOU
(Adi Wojaczek) DE 2019, 14’

The story of young Malou, who after being rejected by a famous dance school, does everything to prove that she is destined to be a dancer.  

The director of the film, Adi Wojaczek, born in Upper Silesia, is a winner of prestigious awards. His short film, The 99Fire Films Award, was awarded at the Berlin Festival in 2015, and his next work, Die Mauer/The Wall, was nominated for an Oscar two years later.

 

A FAMILY AFFAIR
(Florence Keith-Roach) GB 2019, 13’


An atypical romantic comedy full of humour, whose main character Annabelle wakes up in an unknown bedroom on her 30th birthday. It soon turns out that it belongs to... 83-year-old Bernard.

Annabell was portrayed by Florence Keith-Roach, a director who works both in film (including a role in Philomena) and theatre (plays: Eggs, Mexit, Straight Lines). She is also the founder of Orphee Productions, an enterprise run by women and focused on telling stories from a feminine point of view. In A Family Affair she is accompanied on screen by John Standing - one of the most respected English actors (The Eagle Has Landed, The Elephant Man, Mrs. Dalloway).

In the apocalyptic future, during the last world war, a lonely government worker finds comfort with a soldier. Their common future is called into question when the military men is sent back into battle.

Film director Fon Davis is a Vietnamese-born special effects specialist, based in the United States. He has worked on major Hollywood productions, including Godzilla II, Interstellar and Guardians of the Galaxy.
