| As you would expect from a professional stand-up comic, Nina Geld’s performances are full of dry wit, sarcasm and vulgar jokes that often cross the limits of good taste. For Nina, portrayed with great aplomb by Mary Elisabeth Winstead, humour and performance are a means to work trauma and confused emotions out of her system. Nina decides to give herself a second chance: she breaks things off with her married lover and moves to Los Angeles. There she meets Rafe (played by Common, the popular rapper), the total opposite of her previous partner. Going from one extreme to another is not easy, as Nina will find out as she tries to rebuild both her private and her professional life. All About Nina is a cross between a drama and an unusual love story. In the background, but equally important, are first-time director and screenwriter Eva Vives’s observations on the stand-up world boys’ club, a place where sexual harassment and abuse are all too common.
