Kino Pod Baranami

A daring comedy of errors, Andrzej Munk's Bad Luck, is presented as a part of the Short History of Polish Cinema review. The screening at Kino Pod Baranami will take place on Tuesday, June 20. Each viewer of the screening will receive a discount to the workshops, organised by Varsztatovnia Foundation.

Short History of Polish Cinema is a review of Polish film classics that takes place in 72 arthouse cinemas in 58 cities across Poland. The event, which started in February, features monthly screenings of ten films selected by Tomasz Kolankiewicz. All films are digitally remastered with English subtitles. Each screening is preceded by a video lecture prepared by the review's curator.

The next title presented as part of the series is Bad Luck by Andrzej Munk. Kino Pod Baranami will screen the film on Tuesday, June 20.

Bad Luck is a true mosaic of styles and poetics: from slapstick comedy, grotesque, tragicomedy, war film and philosophical poem. It is also one of the most important works of the Polish Film School, with which director Andrzej Munk (Eroica, Man on the Tracks) proved his outstanding skills in the field of comedy.

Jan Piszczyk (a brilliant role by Bogumil Kobiela) is a witness to the landmark events of the 20th century. He is an extreme conformist, who tries to slide through the successive turbulences of great history, adopting each of the dominant ideologies. His strenuous efforts - somewhat reminiscent of the affliction of the titular Zelig from Woody Allen's film - usually end in failure, as the main character is haunted by tremendous bad luck.

Bad Luck sparked heated discussions among viewers and critics. Many pointed out that the film can be read as an ironic commentary on Polish weaknesses and falseness hiding behind national symbols.

Each viewer attending the screening of the film Bad Luck at Kino Pod Baranami will receive a discount coupon for any workshop conducted by the Varsztatovnia Foundation. Bad Luck is a creative, spontaneous and highly original film, directly encouraging people to develop their own artistic expression. A great opportunity to do so is the various workshops offered by the Foundation.
