Jerzy Kawalerowicz's The Train is presented as part of the Short History of Polish Cinema review which began in February. Each viewer of the screening will be able to visit Stacja Muzeum Czernichów Główny with a discount.

Short History of Polish Cinema is a review of Polish film classics that takes place in 72 arthouse cinemas in 58 cities across Poland. The event, which began in February, features ten titles selected by Tomasz Kolankiewicz, Artistic Director of the Polish Film Festival in Gdynia. All films are screened in digitally remastered versions with English subtitles. Each screening is preceded by a video lecture prepared by the review's curator.

The second title presented as part of the series is The Train by Jerzy Kawalerowicz. Kino Pod Baranami will screen the film on Tuesday, March 28.

Made in the late 1950s, this film eluded stylistic and genre classifications. It was intriguing in its ambiguity, insightful in its portrayal of Polish post-war society, and delightful in its technical aspect. It was awarded the Georges Méliès Prize at the Venice Festival. Recognized as a study of human loneliness, The Train was also praised for Jan Laskowski's cinematography, which created the film's unique atmosphere, and the excellent acting performances by Leon Niemczyk and Lucyna Winnicka.

Each viewer attending the screening of The Train at Kino Pod Baranami will receive a discount coupon for a visit to Stacja Muzeum Czernichów Główny, where historic rolling stock and railroad exhibits can be viewed.

ABOUT THE FILM:

THE TRAIN | POCIĄG
(Jerzy Kawalerowicz) PL 1959, 93’

People with personal crises meet in the compartment of a night express train. After some initial misunderstandings, a feeling is born. In the middle of the journey, the police enter the train looking for a murder suspect. The murderer flees into the dark of the night. The passengers rush after him, planning but ultimately failing to lynch him. The coincidental meeting with the killer awakens their lowest instincts, blinding them to his personal tragedy.

A close look into the psychology of people spending the night together in the compartment of a sleeping car, who focus so much on their own problems that they confine themselves to inner loneliness.

Film screened with English subtitles.
