This is the island of Reunion, the birthplace of maloya, a musical and dance style with a short rhythmic tempo and creole sung lyrics. Created by slaves brought to Reunion, it became a symbol of resistance against oppressive powers. Albeit a national tradition for many years this music was banned on the island. Today it is ecognized and admired worldwide. Two artists who continue the maloya tradition guide us into this world portrayed in Anaïs Charles-Dominique's film. Maloya, for them, is more than just music – it is a philosophy, a religion and a way of life. Rhythms set by drums and rattles imitate the beating of a heart, bringing about a trance-like state. This is turn makes the experience mystical, something that permeates through the silver screen to the viewers.
Overflowing with beautiful sounds the melancholic, "Maloya" attempts to capture the modern vibe of Reunion and poses questions about tradition in the ever faster evolving world.
