| For Rojin, a young Kurdish girl, the university entrance exam means a lot more than you might think. This brief event will determine her path forward — not just for the next few years, but for the rest of her life. If she succeeds and gets into the university, she’ll have a shot at independence; if not, she’ll have to face an arranged marriage and a fate similar to that of her older sister Shilan, who does not seem happy — in fact she’s totally at the mercy of her domineering husband. Shilan knows what’s at stake and will do anything to give Rojin a chance for a different, more liberated life. But it won't be easy in a country where corruption is ubiquitous and women's rights are not well respected. Award-winning director Shawkat Amin Korki, who comes from Iraqi Kurdistan, tackles a subject that’s often overlooked by cinema from that region. The Exam is a moving story about female emancipation and the right to education and self-determination, but it’s also about the relentless pressure Rojin has to endure, as she realizes that despite her young age she’s at a turning point in her life.
