Główną bohaterką filmu egipskiego reżysera i aktywisty Mohameda Diaba jest siedemnastoletnia Palestynka Amira. Mimo że jej ojciec od lat przebywa w więzieniu, łączy ją z nim wyjątkowa więź. Nie jest łatwo, bo krótkie wizyty muszą zastąpić codzienną obecność mężczyzny w życiu nastolatki.
Dziewczyna się nie zraża, zwłaszcza że może liczyć na wsparcie i czułość ze strony otaczających ją bliskich. Kiedy jednak przy próbie poczęcia kolejnego dziecka okazuje się, że jej ojciec jest bezpłodny, względnie uporządkowany świat Amiry rozpada się na kawałki. W jej głowie pojawiają się kolejne pytania, na które nie może znaleźć odpowiedzi. Trudno bowiem pogodzić jej się z faktem, że wszystko, w co tak bardzo wierzyła, może okazać się kłamstwem.
Poszukiwanie tożsamości to jeden z ulubionych tematów dla filmowców. Mohamed Diab umieszcza go co prawda w lokalnym kontekście, ale w dużej mierze po to, by pokazać chaos, jaki rodzi się w głowie młodej, wchodzącej dopiero w dorosłe życie bohaterki w obliczu ekstremalnej dla niej sytuacji. Doceniona na wielu festiwalach filmowych Amira w szerszym kontekście to wnikliwe spojrzenie na dzisiejszy podzielony świat oczami zagubionej nastolatki.
| The protagonist of Egyptian director and activist Mohamed Diab's film is Amira, a 17-year-old Palestinian girl. She has a special bond with her father, even though he’s been in prison for years. It’s not easy — the short visits are no substitute for having him fully present in her life. And yet Amira is not discouraged; she can count on the support and affection of those close to her. But when her father tries to conceive another child and turns out to be infertile, Amira's somewhat orderly life falls to pieces. So many unanswered questions keep coming to the surface. It’s hard for her to come to terms with the idea that everything she believed in so deeply could be a lie. The search for identity is a favorite topic for filmmakers; Mohamed Diab places it in a local context, mostly in order to show the chaos that arises in the head of a young woman faced with an extremely difficult situation, just as she’s stepping into her adult life. Amira has been highly acclaimed at many film festivals; in a broader sense, it’s an insightful look at today's divided world through the eyes of a confused teenager.
