Tytuł pełnometrażowego debiutu Alexa Camilleriego odnosi się do tradycyjnych drewnianych łodzi używanych przez maltańskich rybaków do przybrzeżnych połowów. Jednym z nich jest kontynuujący rodzinną tradycję Jesmark.
Coraz szybszy rozwój tego rzemiosła na skalę przemysłową, restrykcyjne prawne regulacje, ale i postępująca degradacja ekosystemu sprawiają, że takim jak on nie jest łatwo utrzymać najbliższych. Zwłaszcza że potrzeby finansowe bohatera gwałtownie wzrastają, gdy się okazuje, że jego nowo narodzony syn wymaga kosztownego leczenia. Jedyną szansą dla zdesperowanego mężczyzny wydają się szemrane interesy z ludźmi kontrolującymi lokalny czarny rynek. Stawka jest wysoka, bo na szali obok dumy i ideałów leży przecież zdrowie jego dziecka.
W Luzzu doskonale znający środowisko, o którym opowiada, reżyser stara się unikać prostych opozycji. Nic nie jest tu czarno-białe, a nawet te najprostsze wybory urastają do rangi poważnych moralnych dylematów. To także opowieść o trudnym losie tradycji, wypieranej przez agresywny kapitalizm, który sprawia, że coraz trudniej żyć w zgodzie z własnymi ideałami. Film Alexa Camilleriego był maltańskim kandydatem do Oscara.
| The title of Alex Camilleri's feature debut refers to the traditional wooden boats used by Maltese fishermen for fishing along the coast. Jesmark is one of those fishermen, carrying on the family tradition. The rapid, industrial-scale development of this kind of work, as well as restrictive regulations and the progressive degradation of the ecosystem, make it difficult for people like Jesmark to support their families — particularly when it turns out that his newborn son requires expensive medical treatment. Shady dealings with the people who control the local black market seem to be the desperate man’s only hope. The stakes are high because, in spite of his values and personal pride, the health of his child is on the line. Camilleri, who’s very familiar with this world, tries to avoid simple dichotomies: nothing is black and white, and even simple choices can mushroom into serious moral dilemmas. This is also a story about the harsh reality of tradition being pushed out by aggressive capitalism, which in turn makes living according to personal ideals increasingly difficult. Alex Camilleri's film was Malta’s official entry for the Academy Awards®.
